Album review – “2 D Y 4” – Dyna

2 D Y 4 is the second album from American singer Dyna Shirasaki, coming some 11 years after her first, the self titled Dyna. Shirasaki is best known in the US as the lead singer in the all girl AC/DC tribute band Thunderherstruck, but for those expecting a similar sound in this album, be prepared to be surprised.

2 D Y 4 has been categorised by selling outlets as industrial rock, however it is much more than that. The range of songs included on the album go from rock, to dance and finishing with melodic ballads.

The album opens with three rock tracks “Nowhere 2 go”, “Monkey” and “Sugar Sugar” the first of which I particularly enjoyed, and the sound reminded me of Evanescence. Three of the next four tracks have been designated as dance mix, but I’m not sure that I totally agree with this description. However, “Superstar” can definitely be put into this category. Whilst I am not a fan of the genre, Superstar is definitely a club/dance mix track and  have to admit to liking it immensely. The track has been accompanied by a fun video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0X0VfGl_ow), which portrays Shirasaki as Supergirl rather than superstar, defeating the bad guys in several fight scenes, finally winning out and driving away in what else but a red Ferrari.

Completing the tracks are two ballads, “Good For You”, and my favourite of the whole album “Angel”, in which Shirasaki proves that not only can she belt out a good rock song, but she also has the range and subtlety to handle these types of songs.

The more I listened to the album, the more I liked it. Although a couple of the songs were not to my taste I thoroughly enjoyed it, and would recommend anyone who likes bands such as the previously mentioned Evanescence, to give it a try. Let’s hope that we don’t have to wait another 11 years before album number three appears on the shelves.
